The question asks you to locate three major Sufi shrines and three temple sites (one each for Vishnu, Shiva, and the goddess) on an outline map of India — a standard exercise in NCERT Class XII History (Themes in Indian History, Part II).

Let us begin with the Sufi shrines. The NCERT textbook discusses the Chishti order in detail, and its most important centres are in North India. The shrine of Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti in Ajmer (Rajasthan) is the most famous — it became a major pilgrimage site for both Muslims and Hindus. The second is the dargah of Nizamuddin Auliya in Delhi (Nizamuddin area), which was a vibrant centre of spiritual learning and music. The third is the shrine of Baba Farid in Pakpattan (now in Pakistan, but historically part of undivided Punjab). Since the map is of India, you should instead mark the dargah of Sheikh Salim Chishti in Fatehpur Sikri (Uttar Pradesh), which Akbar held in great reverence. Alternatively, you could mark the shrine of Shah Jalal in Sylhet (now Bangladesh) — but again, for a map of India, stick to Ajmer, Delhi, and Fatehpur Sikri.

Note

The NCERT textbook (Class XII, Themes in Indian History, Part II, Chapter 6) specifically mentions the dargahs of Muinuddin Chishti (Ajmer), Nizamuddin Auliya (Delhi), and Baba Farid (Pakpattan). For a map of India, replace Pakpattan with Fatehpur Sikri, which is also discussed in the context of Mughal patronage.

Now for the temple sites. The NCERT textbook (Class XII, Part I, Chapter 4) discusses the development of temple architecture and the worship of Vishnu, Shiva, and the goddess. For a form of Vishnu, mark the Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh) — Venkateswara is a form of Vishnu. Alternatively, you could mark the Jagannath Temple in Puri (Odisha), where Jagannath is considered a form of Vishnu. For Shiva, the most prominent is the Brihadeshwara Temple in Thanjavur (Tamil Nadu), built by the Chola king Rajaraja I. For the goddess, mark the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati (Assam), dedicated to the goddess Kamakhya (a form of Shakti). Another option is the Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra (Jammu and Kashmir), but the NCERT textbook specifically mentions Kamakhya as a major Shakti centre. …
