Part (a): Partition (1947) caused mass migration, communal violence, a refugee-rehabilitation crisis, and the difficult division of assets and territory (including the Kashmir dispute).

Part (a)

The partition of British India in 1947, along broadly religious lines, produced a cascade of tragic consequences. Four stand out.

First, an unprecedented mass migration. As the borders were drawn — especially through Punjab and Bengal — communities found themselves on the "wrong" side. Hindus and Sikhs moved towards India and Muslims towards Pakistan in a desperate, chaotic exodus, one of the largest forced migrations in human history, with millions uprooted from ancestral homes.

Second, horrific communal violence. The migration was accompanied by massacres, looting, arson and unspeakable atrocities between communities. Law and order collapsed in many areas, and hundreds of thousands were killed, with countless women abducted, mutilated or killed.

Third, an enormous refugee and rehabilitation crisis. Both fledgling states suddenly had to provide shelter, food, medical care and livelihoods to millions of refugees.
