The first General Elections in independent India were held in 1951–52, with the actual polling spread across several months and the results formally declared in 1952.

India became independent in 1947, but the country did not go to the polls immediately. The Constitution came into effect on 26 January 1950, establishing India as a sovereign democratic republic. However, holding a nationwide election in a vast, largely illiterate, and newly independent country was an enormous logistical challenge. The Election Commission of India was set up only on 25 January 1950, with Sukumar Sen as the first Chief Election Commissioner. It took nearly two years to prepare the electoral rolls — registering about 173 million voters — and to set up over 1,96,000 polling booths across the country.

The actual voting took place between October 1951 and February 1952. Different states voted on different dates because of the sheer scale of the operation and the need to deploy security forces and polling staff across remote areas. The results were announced in March 1952, and the first Lok Sabha met in May 1952.
