In Poets and Pancakes, Asokamitran points out human foibles — vanity, jealousy, self-importance and pretension at Gemini Studios — through mild, affectionate irony rather than open ridicule, which keeps the piece light, warm and thoroughly engaging.

Asokamitran's method throughout the essay is to observe the people of Gemini Studios with a straight face and let their small absurdities speak for themselves. He never lectures or condemns; he simply notes the gap between how people see themselves and how they actually appear, and that quiet gap is where the humour lives.

He opens with the make-up department, where a team of men worked to make the players look presentable but, in his wry telling, were far more likely to make them 'hideous' — layering pancake make-up so thickly under fierce lights that a decent-looking face was turned monstrous. Subbu himself is drawn with affectionate irony — endlessly loyal, endlessly resourceful, able to suggest a dozen ways to shoot any scene, and rewarded for a cheerfulness that looks a little like flattery. The 'legal adviser', by contrast, is remembered for the one occasion when, simply by recording an actress's outburst, he effectively ended her career — so the man meant to protect people is the one who did the most harm. …
