Edla Williamson is the compassionate daughter of the ironmaster who visits the forge at night to invite the peddler to their Christmas celebration, driven by her genuine kindness and desire to treat him with dignity.

Edla Williamson is a character from Selma Lagerlöf’s short story “The Rattrap,” which is part of the NCERT Class 12 English textbook (Flamingo). She is the daughter of the ironmaster, a wealthy man who owns the manor house near the forge. Unlike her father, who is quick to judge and dismiss the peddler once he discovers his true identity, Edla is perceptive, gentle, and deeply humane. She represents the story’s central theme: that kindness and respect can transform even the most hardened soul.

The forge is the blacksmith’s workshop where the peddler, a poor and lonely tramp, has taken shelter for the night. Edla visits the forge at night not because she is curious or suspicious, but because she feels a deep sense of responsibility and compassion. She has seen the peddler’s fear and vulnerability during the earlier encounter, and she cannot bear the thought of him being turned out into the cold Christmas night. Her father’s harshness disturbs her, and she insists on honouring the invitation they had extended. She tells her father, “He has been fooled once, and now he is afraid of being fooled again. But we must not let him go. It is Christmas Eve, and we must treat him as a guest.” …
