Eco ultimately calls the huge success of The Name of the Rose a mystery no one can predict — while noting that, contrary to what journalists and publishers assume, many readers do want a difficult book.

Eco refuses to give a neat explanation. He points out that it is journalists and publishers who are puzzled, because they wrongly believe that people like trash and do not like difficult reading experiences.
