The distinctive feature of Eco's scholarly writing is that he tells it as a story — narrating the research itself, trials and errors included — giving his essays a playful, personal, narrative quality unlike the usual dry academic style.

Mukund notes that Eco's non-fiction has a playful and personal quality, a marked departure from a regular academic style, which is invariably depersonalised and often dry and boring. Eco traces this to his first Doctoral dissertation: one of the professors observed that, whereas scholars usually make a lot of false hypotheses, then correct them and put the conclusions at the end, "You, on the contrary, told the story of your research. Even including your trials and errors." The professor appreciated it and went on to publish the dissertation as a book.
