Eco explains his enormous output through the idea of interstices — the small empty spaces of everyday life, which he fills with work while others let them go to waste.

When Mukund Padmanabhan remarks on the staggering range and volume of Eco's output and asks how he finds the time, Eco answers playfully that he has "a secret." He begins with a striking image: if you could eliminate the empty spaces from all the atoms of the universe, the whole universe would shrink to the size of his fist. In the same way, he says, our lives contain a great many empty spaces, which he calls interstices. His method is simply to work in them.
