Part I shows the interview sharply divides opinion: some prize it as a source of truth and an art, while many celebrities despise it as an intrusion that wounds and diminishes them.

Silvester notes that opinions of the interview — its functions, methods and merits — vary considerably. On the positive side, some make extravagant claims for it: in its highest form a source of truth, and in its practice an art. Silvester himself calls it "a supremely serviceable medium of communication," and quotes Denis Brian, who says our most vivid impressions of our contemporaries reach us through interviews, so that the interviewer holds a position of unprecedented power. On the negative side, many celebrities see themselves as its victims. Naipaul felt people are "wounded by interviews and lose a part of themselves." Lewis Carroll had "a just horror of the interviewer" and never consented to be interviewed. Rudyard Kipling condemned it as "immoral... a crime... an assault." H. G.
