Denis Brian's remark, quoted in Part I, means that because the public knows famous people chiefly through interviews, the interviewer who mediates that knowledge holds unprecedented power over how a subject is perceived.

The statement comes from Denis Brian, whom Silvester quotes near the end of Part I. Brian's reasoning is that, "these days, more than at any other time, our most vivid impressions of our contemporaries are through interviews," and that "almost everything of moment reaches us through one man asking questions of another." In other words, the interview has become the main channel through which the public forms its picture of well-known people. Whoever controls that channel controls the picture: the interviewer decides whom to approach, which questions to ask and press, and — when the exchange is written up — what to include and what to leave out.
