Stability in sport is an athlete's ability to resist being pushed off balance and to stay in control of their position. A wrestler crouching low to avoid being thrown, a sprinter braced in the blocks, and a gymnast holding a landing are all managing the same few factors that decide stability.
Three things affect it:
- Base of support — a wider base makes a body harder to tip. A wrestler widens the stance to become hard to move, so a larger base increases stability.
- Weight — a heavier body is harder to shift, so greater weight increases stability (a heavier player is harder to knock over).
- Centre of gravity — this is the point where the body's whole weight seems to act. Stability depends on keeping the line dropped straight down from the centre of gravity inside the base of support.
