Three prominent physiological changes are: (1) a decline in sensory abilities such as vision and hearing, (2) reduced efficiency of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and (3) a loss of bone density and muscle mass.
Concept understanding — ageing as a biological process
Ageing is not merely the passing of years; it is a gradual, largely irreversible change in how the body's systems function. The changes are universal but their pace differs between individuals, shaped by heredity, lifestyle and environment.
Change 1 — decline in sensory abilities
Vision and hearing are affected most. The lens of the eye loses flexibility, making it harder to focus on near objects, and the lens may cloud over time. Hearing weakens, especially for high-pitched sounds. Because following conversation becomes harder, this can lead to social withdrawal if unsupported.
Change 2 — reduced cardiovascular and respiratory efficiency
The heart pumps less forcefully and blood vessels lose elasticity, so the heart cannot raise its output as quickly during exertion. Lung capacity drops and the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide becomes less efficient. As a result older adults tire more easily and take longer to recover from physical effort. Regular exercise slows this decline.
