Motor educability is the ability to pick up new, unfamiliar movements quickly. The Johnson-Metheny test assesses this using a short set of stunts that the performer is unlikely to have practised before, so that natural learning ability — not prior training, strength or speed — decides the score. Each item is shown once and the performer then attempts it, earning marks for how correctly it is done.
The four test items are:
- Front Roll — from a standing position the performer rolls forward along the length of the mat in a controlled, continuous roll and comes back up.
- Back Roll — from a standing position the performer rolls backward over the shoulders and returns to standing, smoothly and under control.
