Menarche is the first menstrual period a girl experiences. It occurs during puberty, is driven by reproductive hormones, and marks the beginning of her reproductive years. Its timing differs from one girl to another.

Concept understanding — what menarche is

"Menarche" refers specifically to the first-ever menstrual bleeding in a girl's life. It is one of the landmark events of puberty, the stage when a child's body matures toward adulthood. It signals that the reproductive system has become active and that the monthly menstrual cycle has started.

As puberty advances, the brain signals the ovaries to release reproductive hormones — mainly oestrogen and progesterone. Each month these hormones thicken the inner lining of the uterus in preparation for a possible pregnancy. When pregnancy does not occur, the lining is shed and passes out as menstrual blood. The very first time this shedding happens is menarche.
