Four asanas that help control asthma are Sukhasana, Chakrasana, Gomukhasana and Matsyasana — each works by opening the chest, expanding the lungs, improving posture or calming the breath.

Asthma narrows and inflames the airways, causing wheezing, breathlessness and chest tightness. Regular, gentle yoga supports the lungs by strengthening the muscles of breathing, widening the chest, correcting posture and reducing stress, which is a common trigger. The following four asanas are useful for this:

  • Sukhasana (Easy Pose) — a comfortable cross-legged seated posture with an erect spine. It settles the breath, calms the nervous system and opens the chest for easier, deeper breathing.
  • Chakrasana (Wheel Pose) — a backward-bending arch that strongly expands the chest and rib cage, stretches the muscles between the ribs and increases the capacity of the lungs.
  • Gomukhasana (Cow Face Pose) — a seated pose with one arm reaching over the shoulder and the other up the back. It opens the chest, draws the shoulders back and corrects the rounded posture that restricts lung expansion. …
