(b) the bye team, team no. 15, wins with the fewest matches;
(c) matches = N - 1 = 14;
(d) 16 teams need 0 byes. Byes = (next higher power of 2) - (number of teams).
Part (a) — the 15-team knockout fixture
| Part | Question | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| (a) | Number of rounds | 4 |
| (b) | Team winning with fewest matches | Team no. 15 (first-round bye) |
| (c) | Formula for number of matches | N − 1 = 15 − 1 = 14 |
| (d) | Byes needed for 16 teams | 0 |
- (a) Number of rounds. In a knockout the number of rounds equals the power to which 2 must be raised to reach the smallest power of 2 that is at least the number of teams. For 15 teams the next power of 2 is 16 (which is 2 raised to the power 4), so there are 4 rounds.
- (b) The winner who plays the fewest matches. A team that gets a bye in the first round does not play that round, so it plays one match fewer than the others; if it then wins every round it reaches the title with the least number of matches. With 15 teams there is exactly one bye (16 - 15 = 1), and a bye is allotted first to the last team of the lower half — team no. 15. So the team that can win while playing the fewest matches is team no. 15.
- (c) Formula for the number of matches. Each match knocks out exactly one team, and all but the champion must be knocked out, so the number of matches is N - 1 = 15 - 1 = 14. …
