Q.Study the pictures given below: (4 × 1 = 4) [Figure: three images of a long bone — Image-1 a bone with a fine transverse crack, Image-2 a bone broken diagonally into two parts, Image-3 an intact bone] Based on the above study and your knowledge, answer the following questions:

A fracture is a break in the continuity of a bone, and the way the bone breaks tells us about the force involved and how it should be treated. Taking the images and the clues in turn:
-
(a) Image-1 — a bone broken straight across. When the break runs straight across the bone, at a right angle to its long axis, it is a Transverse fracture. This typically follows a sharp, direct blow at right angles to the bone.
-
(b) Image-2 — a bone broken diagonally. When the break line runs at an angle, slanting across the shaft, it is an Oblique fracture. It usually results from a force applied along the length of the bone or from a twisting action, and the slanting surfaces make it less stable than a straight transverse break.
-
(c) The broken ends jammed together. When the force of the injury drives the two broken ends into each other, so that one fragment is wedged into the other, it is an Impacted fracture. The compressed ends may seem stable at first but can shorten the bone slightly. …
