[!TLDR]

Voltage shunt = output voltage sampled, feedback returned in parallel (shunt) at the input; current series = output current sampled, feedback returned in series at the input.

Each negative-feedback connection is named by two choices — how the output is sampled (voltage or current) and how the feedback is mixed at the input (series or shunt).

Voltage shunt negative feedback (shunt-derived, shunt-fed):

  • The output voltage VoV_o developed across the load RLR_L is sampled.
  • The feedback network develops a feedback current IfI_f that is mixed in parallel (shunt) with the input at node ViV_i.
  • The input is best represented by a current source IsI_s; the feedback factor is β=If/Vo\beta = I_f/V_o.

Current series negative feedback (series-derived, series-fed):

  • The output current IoI_o flowing through the load is sampled (the load is in series with the output).
  • The feedback network returns a feedback voltage in series with the input voltage source VsV_s.
  • The input is represented by a voltage source VsV_s in the loop; the feedback factor is β=If/Io\beta = I_f/I_o. …
