Step 1a. CH3-CH2-CH(⊕)-CH2-CH3 (pentan-3-yl cation). The cationic carbon is C3. Its α-carbons (directly bonded to C3) are C2 and C4, each a -CH2- group carrying 2 hydrogens. Total α-hydrogens = 2 + 2 = 4.
