Step 1. The governing rule. Orbitals fill in order of increasing (n+l)(n+l) value; if two orbitals tie on (n+l)(n+l), the one with the smaller n fills first.

Step 2. Apply it. 1s (1+0=1); 2s (2+0=2); 2p (2+1=3, smaller n than 3s which also totals 3); 3s (3+0=3); 3p (3+1=4, smaller n than 4s which also totals 4); 4s (4+0=4); 3d (3+2=5, smaller n than 4p which also totals 5); 4p (4+1=5); 5s (5+0=5, but higher n+l than 3d/4p is wrong — actually 5s has n+l=5, tying 3d/4p; but 5s's n=5 is larger than both, so it fills after them); continuing similarly gives 4d, 5p, 6s, 4f, 5d, 6p, 7s. …
