Step 1. Definition. The principal quantum number, n, is a positive integer taking values 1,2,3,4,…1, 2, 3, 4, \ldots. It identifies the SHELL an orbital belongs to; all orbitals sharing one value of n form a single shell, conventionally labelled K, L, M, N, ... for n = 1, 2, 3, 4, ...

Step 2. What it governs. As n increases: (i) the number of orbitals allowed in that shell grows as n2n^2;

(ii) the physical size (distance from the nucleus) of the shell increases;

(iii) for hydrogen and hydrogen-like species, orbital energy En=−RH/n2E_n = -R_H/n^2 becomes LESS negative (higher) — electrons in larger-n shells are less tightly bound.
