(i) Long-distance radio broadcasting uses short wave bands (roughly the 3-30 MHz sky-wave range of section 13.4.3) because waves in this frequency range are reflected by the ionosphere and can bounce repeatedly between the ionosphere and the Earth's surface, letting them cover very large distances that ground wave propagation (limited to frequencies below 2 MHz and short range, section 13.4.1) could never reach. (ii) Television signals use much higher (very high) frequencies, which -- per section 13.4.2 -- pass through the ionosphere with only a small deviation instead of being reflected back down, so they cannot use natural sky wave propagation at all; nor can simple ground-based space wave (line-of-sight) propagation carry them over large distances, since the curvature of the Earth limits line-of-sight range severely.
