(B) CONSERVATIVE vs NON-CONSERVATIVE forces: a conservative force does work that is independent of the path taken between two points (e.g. gravity), allowing a well-defined potential energy to be associated with it, and conserves total mechanical energy; a non-conservative force (e.g. friction, air drag) does path-dependent work that is not recoverable, dissipating mechanical energy as heat/sound (4.5.4).
