Directing focuses on guiding and motivating individual subordinates, while coordinating focuses on integrating the efforts of all persons and departments into a unified whole.

Though both are functions of management, Directing and Co-ordinating differ on several points:

1. Meaning: Directing means instructing, guiding, communicating with, supervising and motivating employees to get work done. Co-ordinating means arranging and harmonising the activities of different persons and departments so they act as a single, unified team.

2. Objective: Directing aims to make subordinates work efficiently and willingly. Co-ordination aims to achieve unity of action and avoid overlapping, duplication and conflict among departments.

3. Scope / Nature: Directing is mainly a downward relationship between a superior and his subordinates. Co-ordination runs in all directions — it integrates efforts horizontally and vertically across the whole organisation.

4. Elements: Directing includes supervision, motivation, leadership and communication. Co-ordination is achieved through clear plans, proper communication, cooperation and well-defined authority.
