Marketing mix is the combination of controllable marketing tools — Product, Price, Place and Promotion (the 4 P's) — that a firm blends to satisfy its target customers and meet its objectives.

Meaning of Marketing Mix:

Marketing mix refers to the combination of various elements or tools that a business uses to market its product successfully and to influence the buying decisions of consumers. These elements are within the control of the firm, and the manager must mix or blend them in the right proportion to satisfy the needs of the target market and achieve marketing goals. The traditional marketing mix is made up of four elements, known as the 4 P's.

The four elements of the marketing mix (4 P's):

  1. Product: This is the goods or services offered to satisfy customer needs. Decisions here relate to product design, quality, features, variety, brand name, packaging, labelling and after-sales service. The product is the core of the marketing mix, because without a suitable product the other elements have no meaning.
  2. Price: This is the amount of money that customers pay for the product. Pricing decisions include the price level, discounts, credit terms and pricing strategies. Price must be fixed so that it is acceptable to customers yet profitable to the firm, keeping in mind cost, competition and demand.
  3. Place (Physical Distribution): This refers to making the product available to customers at the right place and time. It covers the choice of distribution channels (wholesalers, retailers, agents), transportation, warehousing and inventory management, so that goods reach the consumer conveniently.
  4. Promotion: This means informing customers about the product and persuading them to buy it. Promotion includes advertising, personal selling, sales promotion and publicity/public relations, together known as the promotion mix. …
