Marketing mix means combining the four controllable variables — Product, Price, Place and Promotion (the 4 P's) — in the right proportion to satisfy customers and achieve marketing objectives. A well-balanced mix wins customer satisfaction and profits.

The marketing mix is the combination of controllable marketing tools that a business uses to create the desired response in its target market. Professor E. Jerome McCarthy grouped these tools into four elements, the four P's. Each element is decided by the firm and must be blended so that the offering matches customer needs.

1. Product

Product is the central element — the good or service offered to satisfy a customer's want. Decisions include product design, quality, features, brand name, packaging, labelling, product range, warranty and after-sales service. A firm must plan the product to solve the customer's problem.

2. Price

Price is the amount of money customers pay for the product. It is the only element that earns revenue; the others create cost. Pricing decisions cover the pricing method, price level, discounts, allowances, credit terms and seasonal pricing. Price must be acceptable to customers yet cover cost and yield profit.

3. Place (Physical Distribution)

Place means making the product available to customers at the right place and right time. It includes selection of distribution channels (wholesalers, retailers, agents), transportation, warehousing, inventory management and order processing. Good distribution ensures the product reaches the customer conveniently.
