Biogas is chiefly methane and carbon dioxide, produced by anaerobic digestion, and offers several environmental and economic benefits.

  1. Biogas, produced by anaerobic (microbial) digestion of organic waste such as animal dung and plant residues in a biogas plant, is composed chiefly of methane (roughly 50-70%) and carbon dioxide (roughly 25-45%), along with small proportions of other gases such as hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen, hydrogen and water vapour.
  2. Any four benefits of biogas: (1) It is a clean, renewable and eco-friendly fuel used for cooking and lighting, producing little smoke or soot. (2) It reduces dependence on firewood, thereby helping to check deforestation, and reduces reliance on fossil fuels like LPG/kerosene. (3) The digested slurry left over after biogas generation is rich in nitrogen and other nutrients and serves as an excellent organic manure/biofertiliser for crops.
