Homoleptic complexes have identical ligands throughout; heteroleptic complexes have two or more different kinds of ligands.

Homoleptic complexes: Complexes in which the central metal ion is bonded to only one kind of donor group (i.e. all ligands are identical) are called homoleptic complexes.

Example: [Co(NH3)6]3+[Co(NH_3)_6]^{3+} — cobalt is surrounded only by ammonia ligands.

Heteroleptic complexes: Complexes in which the central metal ion is bonded to more than one kind of donor group (i.e. two or more different ligands are present) are called heteroleptic complexes.
