Q.State Faraday's first law of electrolysis. Write any 'two' uses of each of the following: a. H2SO4H_2SO_4 b. Chlorine. Distinguish between crystalline solids and amorphous solids. A solution of a substance having mass 1.8×10−31.8 \times 10^{-3} kg has the osmotic pressure of 0.52 atm at 280 K. Calculate the molar mass of the substance used. [Volume = 1 dm31\ dm^3, R=8.314 J K−1 mol−1R = 8.314\ J\ K^{-1}\ mol^{-1}] OR Define the following: a. Leaching b. Metallurgy c. Anisotropy. Derive an expression for maximum work. The boiling point of benzene is 353.23 K. When 1.80 gram of non-volatile solute was dissolved in 90 gram of benzene, the boiling point is raised to 354.11 K. Calculate the molar mass of solute. [KbK_b for benzene = 2.53 K kg mol−12.53\ K\ kg\ mol^{-1}]

A combined multi-part question spanning electrolysis law, industrial uses, solid-state classification and an osmotic-pressure molar-mass calculation (or, in the OR branch, metallurgy definitions, the maximum-work expression and a boiling-point-elevation molar-mass calculation.

a. Faraday's first law of electrolysis: the mass of a substance deposited or liberated at an electrode during electrolysis is directly proportional to the quantity of electricity (charge) passed through the electrolyte: m∝Qm \propto Q, i.e. m=Zitm = Zit, where ZZ is the electrochemical equivalent, ii the current and tt the time.

b. Two uses each:

  • H2SO4H_2SO_4: (i) manufacture of fertilisers such as ammonium sulphate and superphosphate, (ii) as the electrolyte in lead-acid storage batteries.
  • Chlorine: (i) as a bleaching agent for wood pulp/textiles, (ii) for disinfecting/sterilising drinking water.

c. Crystalline vs amorphous solids: crystalline solids have a definite, ordered, repeating 3-D arrangement of particles (long-range order), a characteristic geometric shape, a sharp and definite melting point, and are anisotropic (physical properties like refractive index differ with direction) — they are true solids. Amorphous solids have only short-range order, no definite external shape, soften gradually over a range of temperature rather than melting sharply, and are isotropic — they behave like supercooled/pseudo-solid liquids.

d. Osmotic pressure → molar mass: using πV=nRT=wMRT\pi V = nRT = \dfrac{w}{M}RT, with w=1.8×10−3 kg=1.8 gw=1.8\times10^{-3}\ kg = 1.8\ g, π=0.52 atm=52689 Pa\pi = 0.52\ atm = 52689\ Pa, V=1 dm3=1×10−3 m3V = 1\ dm^3 = 1\times10^{-3}\ m^3, T=280 KT=280\ K, R=8.314 J K−1mol−1R=8.314\ J\,K^{-1}mol^{-1}:

n=πVRT=52689×1×10−38.314×280=52.692327.9=0.02264 moln = \dfrac{\pi V}{RT} = \dfrac{52689 \times 1\times10^{-3}}{8.314\times280} = \dfrac{52.69}{2327.9} = 0.02264\ mol

M=wn=1.80.02264≈79.5 g mol−1M = \dfrac{w}{n} = \dfrac{1.8}{0.02264} \approx 79.5\ g\,mol^{-1}

OR — a. Definitions: Leaching is a method of concentrating an ore by treating the powdered ore with a suitable chemical reagent that selectively dissolves the ore, leaving the insoluble impurities (gangue) behind — e.g. bauxite (Al2O3Al_2O_3) is leached with hot NaOH in the Bayer process. Metallurgy is the science and technology of extracting metals from their ores and refining them for use. Anisotropy is the property, shown by crystalline solids, of having different values of a physical property (e.g. refractive index, electrical/thermal conductivity) when measured along different crystallographic directions, because the arrangement of constituent particles differs from direction to direction.
