Hardness: in an ionic crystal, each ion is held in place by strong, non-directional electrostatic forces of attraction to its oppositely-charged nearest neighbours, extending throughout the whole rigid, ordered lattice (not just localised bonds). Considerable mechanical force is needed to displace ions from their fixed lattice positions against this strong overall attraction — this is why ionic solids are generally hard, with high melting points.
