Crystalline solids show different physical properties along different directions (anisotropy) because of long-range order; amorphous solids are isotropic, lacking that order.

Anisotropy: the property, characteristic of crystalline solids, whereby physical properties such as refractive index, electrical conductivity, and thermal expansion have different magnitudes when measured along different directions within the same crystal. It arises because the constituent particles are arranged in an orderly, repeating three-dimensional pattern, so the particle density and bonding differ with direction.

Crystalline vs amorphous solids:

PropertyCrystalline solidsAmorphous solids
Particle orderLong-range orderOnly short-range order
ShapeDefinite, regular geometric shapeIrregular shape
Melting pointSharp, characteristic melting pointMelts/softens over a range of temperature
