(i)(a) Schottky defect: A point defect found in ionic crystals in which equal numbers of cations and anions are missing from their normal lattice sites, creating vacancies while maintaining overall electrical neutrality. It occurs typically in ionic solids with a high coordination number and similarly-sized cations and anions (e.g. NaCl, KCl, CsCl), and it lowers the density of the crystal.
(i)(b) Ferromagnetism: The property shown by substances (e.g. Fe, Co, Ni, ) in which the unpaired electron spins in the metal ions spontaneously align parallel to one another within small regions called domains, producing a strong net magnetic moment/permanent magnetism even in the absence of an external magnetic field.
