Substitutional defects put a foreign species IN PLACE of a lattice atom; interstitial defects put it BETWEEN lattice atoms.

(a) Substitutional impurity defect: occurs when foreign atoms or ions of comparable size replace some of the host atoms/ions at their normal lattice positions, without disturbing the overall crystal structure. Example: nickel atoms substituting for copper atoms in solid copper (Cu–Ni alloy); or Sr2+Sr^{2+} replacing Na+Na^+ in NaClNaCl.
