Schottky defect (equal numbers of missing cations and anions) reduces the crystal's density and gives a small conductivity through vacancy hopping.

A Schottky defect arises when an equal number of cations and anions are missing from their normal lattice sites (leaving the crystal electrically neutral overall). Its consequences:

  1. Decrease in density — since ions leave the lattice while the overall volume/dimensions of the crystal remain essentially unchanged, the mass decreases without a corresponding decrease in volume, lowering the density.
