Metal deficiency defect: This non-stoichiometric point defect occurs in ionic crystals of variable-valency (transition) metals, where the actual ratio of metal (cation) to non-metal (anion) is slightly less than the ideal stoichiometric ratio. A cation is missing from its regular lattice site; overall electrical neutrality is maintained because a nearby cation compensates by existing in a higher oxidation state (losing an extra electron). The classic example is ferrous oxide, ideally , which is usually actually found with composition — some lattice sites are vacant, and the resulting charge deficit is balanced by an equivalent number of the remaining iron ions existing as instead of .
