Chemical properties of KMnO₄

a. In acidic medium : The oxidizing reactions of KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4} in acidic medium

i. Oxidation of iodide to iodine :

2MnO4−+10 I−+16H+⟶2Mn2++8H2O+5I2\mathrm{2MnO_4^- + 10\,I^- + 16H^+ \longrightarrow 2Mn^{2+} + 8H_2O + 5I_2}

ii. Oxidation of Fe2+\mathrm{Fe^{2+}} to Fe3+\mathrm{Fe^{3+}}

MnO4−+5Fe2++8H+⟶5Fe3++Mn2++4H2O\mathrm{MnO_4^- + 5Fe^{2+} + 8H^+ \longrightarrow 5Fe^{3+} + Mn^{2+} + 4H_2O}

iii. Oxidation of H2S\mathrm{H_2S}

H2S⟶2H++S2−\mathrm{H_2S \longrightarrow 2H^+ + S^{2-}}

5S2−+2MnO4−+16H+⟶2Mn2++5S+8H2O\mathrm{5S^{2-} + 2MnO_4^- + 16H^+ \longrightarrow 2Mn^{2+} + 5S + 8H_2O}

iv. Oxidation of oxalic acid :

2MnO4−+5H2C2O4+6H+⟶2Mn2++10CO2+8H2O\mathrm{2MnO_4^- + 5H_2C_2O_4 + 6H^+ \longrightarrow 2Mn^{2+} + 10CO_2 + 8H_2O}

b. In neutral or weakly alkaline medium :

i. Oxidation of iodide I−\mathrm{I^-} to iodate IO3−\mathrm{IO_3^-}.

2MnO4−+H2O+I−⟶2MnO2+2OH−+IO3−\mathrm{2MnO_4^- + H_2O + I^- \longrightarrow 2MnO_2 + 2OH^- + IO_3^-}

ii. Thiosulphate (S2O32−\mathrm{S_2O_3^{2-}}) is oxidised to sulphate (SO42−\mathrm{SO_4^{2-}}) …
