Step 1. Trend within one element (successive ionisation enthalpies). For any single transition element, Table 8.6 shows a large, substantial jump from the first ionisation enthalpy (IE1) to the third (IE3) -- e.g. for scandium, IE1=632, IE2=1245, IE3=2450 kJ/mol. This is expected generally: removing an electron from an increasingly positively-charged ion always costs progressively more energy, since each successive electron is held more tightly by the same nuclear charge acting on a smaller, more positive ion.

Step 2. Trend across one series (left to right). Moving across a given transition series, IE1 (and IE2, IE3) show only SLIGHT, somewhat irregular variation -- unlike the smoother, steadily-rising trend typical of an s-block or p-block row. This irregularity is attributed to the extra stability of specific d-electron configurations (particularly the half-filled d5 configuration, Section 8.3.1) partly offsetting the general rightward rise in nuclear charge that would otherwise push IE1 up smoothly. …
