A low-resistance shunt diverts most of the current, letting only a small fraction pass through the sensitive coil.

A galvanometer gives full-scale deflection for a small current IgI_g (its own resistance GG). To convert it into an ammeter reading up to a larger current II, a small resistance SS (the shunt) is connected in parallel with the galvanometer coil, so that most of the current bypasses the coil through the shunt while only IgI_g passes through the galvanometer:
