A potentiometer wire is connected to a steady driver battery (with rheostat) to set up a uniform potential gradient kk along its length. The cell (emf ε\varepsilon, internal resistance rr) whose internal resistance is to be found is connected, via a galvanometer and jockey, to the potentiometer, with a resistance box RR and a switch in the cell's circuit.
