(i) Oxygen content is usually found indirectly (100% minus all other elements' percentages). (ii) In the Carius method, sulphur is oxidised and precipitated as a weighable silver sulphate salt.

This question offers an OR alternative (mechanism of hydrolysis of tert-butyl bromide); the primary two-part estimation question is answered here in full.

(i) Estimation of oxygen [2 marks]:

Unlike carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur and halogens, oxygen does not have a simple, universally-applicable direct method of estimation at this level of study. Its percentage in an organic compound is most commonly determined INDIRECTLY, by the method of difference: the percentages of all the OTHER elements present in the compound (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur, halogens, etc.) are each determined by their own specific methods (Liebig's combustion for C and H, Kjeldahl/Duma's for N, Carius for S/halogens), and the percentage of oxygen is then obtained by subtracting the sum of all these percentages from 100:

% of oxygen = 100 - (% of C + % of H + % of N + % of S + % of halogens + ... all other elements present)

(A direct method also exists - passing the compound's vapour over red-hot carbon to convert all its oxygen into carbon monoxide, then oxidising the CO to CO2 with heated iodine pentoxide (I2O5) and estimating the iodine liberated - but the commonly-taught basic approach is the difference method above.)

(ii) Carius method for estimation of sulphur [3 marks]: …
