Flame cells are ciliated, bulb-shaped excretory cells in flatworms whose beating cilia (resembling a flickering flame) drive fluid and waste into a system of excretory tubules.

Flatworms (Platyhelminthes), such as Planaria, possess a protonephridial excretory system rather than true nephridia.

Each flame cell is a hollow, bulb-shaped cell with a tuft of long cilia projecting into its lumen. The continuous beating of these cilia looks like a flickering candle flame under the microscope — hence the name.
