Renal (kidney) function is chiefly regulated by three hormones — ADH, Aldosterone, and ANF — which respectively control water reabsorption, sodium/water reabsorption, and counteract high blood pressure by promoting excretion.

  • ADH (Antidiuretic hormone, also called Vasopressin): released from the posterior pituitary in response to low blood volume/high blood osmolarity (sensed by osmoreceptors), it increases the permeability of the distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct to water, promoting water reabsorption and producing more concentrated urine.
  • Aldosterone: secreted by the adrenal cortex, part of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) triggered when blood pressure/volume/Na+ level falls. It increases reabsorption of Na+ (and water follows osmotically) and increases K+ excretion in the distal tubule, helping restore blood volume and pressure. …
