Ammonotelism:
- Nitrogenous waste is excreted mainly as ammonia (NH3), which is highly toxic and very water-soluble, requiring large volumes of water to dilute and flush it out safely.
- Found in animals with unlimited access to water: most bony fishes, aquatic amphibian larvae (tadpoles), and many aquatic invertebrates.
Ureotelism:
- Ammonia is converted in the liver (via the ornithine/urea cycle) into urea, a much less toxic compound that can be tolerated at higher concentrations and needs only a moderate amount of water for excretion.
- Found in mammals, adult amphibians (on land), and marine (cartilaginous) fishes.
Uricotelism:
- Nitrogenous waste is converted into uric acid, which is virtually insoluble in water, non-toxic, and can be excreted as a semi-solid paste with very little water loss. …
