When the atrial wall of the heart is stretched by increased blood volume, it secretes Atrial Natriuretic Factor (ANF), a hormone that causes the kidney to excrete more sodium and water, helping regulate blood volume and pressure.

Although its main role is pumping blood, the heart also functions as an endocrine organ. When blood volume increases (for example, after a large fluid or salt intake), the walls of the atria (upper chambers of the heart) become stretched by the extra blood; this mechanical stretching stimulates specialised cells in the atrial wall to secrete a peptide hormone called Atrial Natriuretic Factor (ANF), also known as Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP). ANF acts to counteract the rise in blood volume and pressure in two main ways: first, it causes vasodilation of blood vessels, directly lowering blood pressure; second, and importantly for renal function, it acts on the kidney to increase the excretion of sodium ions and water in the urine (a process called natriuresis, accompanied by diuresis), and it also inhibits the release of renin from the kidney (which in turn suppresses the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone pathway that …
