Step 1. Ray optics alone would predict the region directly behind a small opaque disc, blocking light from a distant point source, to be completely dark -- a simple geometric shadow with no light at all reaching its centre.

Step 2. But light is a wave, and by Huygens' principle every point on the disc's circular edge diffracts light equally, in every direction, into the geometric shadow region behind the disc.

Step 3. By the disc's own circular symmetry, light diffracting inward from every point around the entire circular rim travels exactly the same distance to reach the single point on the axis at the very centre of the shadow -- so all these diffracted wavelets arrive there perfectly in phase with one another, interfering constructively. …
