Step 1. After making the spectrometer's preliminary adjustments (eyepiece, telescope for parallel rays, collimator, levelling the prism table), the collimator's slit is illuminated with the monochromatic light whose wavelength is to be found, and the telescope is first aligned directly with the collimator to view the undiffracted (zero-order) slit image.

Step 2. The diffraction grating is mounted on the prism table with its ruled plane exactly perpendicular to the parallel beam emerging from the collimator, so the beam strikes it at normal incidence.

Step 3. The telescope is turned to one side until the first-order (m=1m=1) diffracted image of the slit coincides with the vertical cross-wire, and this angular position is read off the graduated circular scale.

Step 4. The telescope is then turned to the corresponding first-order image on the other side of the direct beam, and this second position is also read. The difference between the two readings is 2θ2\theta; halving it gives θ\theta, the first-order diffraction angle. …
