Step 1. Dispersion is the splitting of white light into its constituent colours (VIBGYOR) on passing through a prism, because the prism material's refractive index (and hence deviation) is slightly different for each wavelength -- violet (shortest wavelength) has the highest index and is deviated most, red (longest wavelength) has the lowest index and is deviated least.

Step 2. Let δV,δR\delta_V,\delta_R be the deviations for violet and red light, with refractive indices nV,nRn_V,n_R; the angular dispersion (angular gap between the two extreme colours) is δV−δR\delta_V-\delta_R.

Step 3. For a small-angle prism (apex angle AA), the deviation for any colour with refractive index nxn_x is δx=(nx−1)A\delta_x=(n_x-1)A; so δV=(nV−1)A\delta_V=(n_V-1)A and δR=(nR−1)A\delta_R=(n_R-1)A, giving δV−δR=(nV−nR)A\delta_V-\delta_R=(n_V-n_R)A. …
