The collimator is a rigid tube with a convex lens at its inner end and an adjustable-width vertical slit at its outer end, with the slit-to-lens distance set so the slit sits exactly at the lens's own focal point; kept facing the light source, it produces a genuinely parallel beam of light to send towards the prism table.
Step 2. The prism table is a levelled, rotatable circular platform (two discs on three levelling screws) used to mount the prism, grating or other sample under study; it rotates about a vertical axis and its position is read off two verniers, and can be raised or lowered as needed.
