Step 1. Gloriosa superba (Glory Lily) has seed and rhizome as its economically useful parts, containing colchicine (0.5-0.7%) and colchicoside, used to treat gout and as an anti-inflammatory/anticancer agent. It grows well on red loamy soils, cultivated in Tamil Nadu across roughly 2,000 hectares in Tirupur, Dindigul, Karur and Salem districts.

Step 2. Planting runs June-July: the field is ploughed 2-3 times with 10 tonnes of farmyard manure worked in during the last ploughing, and tubers are planted in 30 cm deep trenches spaced 30-45 cm apart, with the resulting vines trained over a support structure as they climb. Irrigation is given immediately after planting and then every 5 days, and pods are harvested at 160-180 days.

Step 3. Cymbopogon citratus (Lemongrass) has its stem base and leaves as the economic part, valued for the aromatic constituents citronella, geraniol and citronellol, used in perfumery, cosmetics, confectionery, beverages, mosquito repellents and toilet cleaners.
