Step 1 – Definition. A catalytic reaction that depends on the pore structure (size and shape of cavities) of the catalyst and on the size of the reactant and product molecules is called shape-selective catalysis.

Step 2 – Basis. Only those molecules whose size and shape allow them to enter the pores of the catalyst can be adsorbed and react; likewise, only product molecules small enough to leave the pores are formed.
